PEARL is merely a more advanced and accurate method for critical writing. With PEARL, we aim to move on from the "sandwich" paragraph or "PEE" paragraphs. Students will be able to literally see what type of information is needed to show a deeper understanding of the medium; and feedback will be much more meaningful than "Please add more detail" or "Please elaborate".
Hopefully, the PEARL structure will help both teachers and students with communication.
James Kim is an English/French teacher at Kwantlen Park Secondary. His foci and passions lie in Victorian and Elizabethan literature, having discovered them at UBC during his time as a Literature major. He furthered pursued his passion for teaching in the UK, where he taught Literature and Classical Studies for four years. Coming back to Vancouver, he rediscovered social-emotional learning and has been expanding his knowledge and skills on how to support students in the classroom.
