The Power of Visuals: Tools for Promoting Language, Comprehension and Thought

Visuals are a useful aid in making content and concepts comprehensible to a wide variety of learners, particularly emerging bilinguals, yet have the potential to engage students in other ways. Students live in an increasingly visual world where the ability to interpret ideas presented in both still and moving images is an important skill. This makes visual literacy a critical component of a multiliteracy framework. This session will introduce a variety of Visual Literacy strategies that support the development of oral language, comprehension and higher-level thinking to engage students at all stages of language and literacy development.
